Charlton Kenneth Jeffrey Howard (born 17 August 2003), professionally known as The Kid Laroi (stylised as The Kid LAROI.), is an Australian rapper, singer, and songwriter. Born in Sydney, but raised in rural Australia, he originally gained recognition from his association and friendship with late rapper Juice Wrld, who mentored him while he was on tour in Australia. Laroi gained a local following before signing to Lil Bibby’s Grade A Records. He became known outside Australia with his song “Let Her Go”, and gained further popularity with his song "Go" featuring Juice Wrld, which peaked at number 52 on the Billboard Hot 100. He is also known for his songs "Diva" (featuring Lil Tecca), "Addison Rae", "Tell Me Why", "Wrong" (featuring Lil Mosey), "So Done" and "Without You". His debut mixtape F*ck Love (2020) peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard 200.
Charlton Howard was born to an Indigenous Australian mother and a French father. He is a member of the Kamilaroi (or Gamilaraay) people, from which he derived his artist name "Laroi". Laroi's great-great grandfather was a part of the Stolen Generation, taken from his family and placed into a white family and was told he was Spanish because of his darker complexion. He later found he was Aboriginal when he was 18.
In 2015, Laroi, going by the mononymous stage name Charlton at the time, met his former mentor and producer named Marcus, better known as DJ Ladykiller. He performed at Marcus’ party to positive reception, and would be managed by him. They eventually formed a duo called Dream Team, and Laroi adopted his current stage name. The duo garnered local attention and performed near the Adelaide area. For unknown reasons, the duo disbanded. Laroi was then discovered by DJ Ziggy and was signed to his ART Management label. Laroi’s debut EP, “14 With a Dream” was released in 2018. In the same year, Laroi garnered attention after becoming a finalist in the Triple J Unearthed high competition. He later signed a record deal with American rapper Lil Bibby's record label Grade A Productions and Columbia Records in 2019. Laroi was mentored by rapper Juice Wrld while he supported him on his Australian national tours in 2018 and 2019. In December 2019, Laroi gained international attention when the music video for his song "Let Her Go" was uploaded on the Lyrical Lemonade YouTube channel.
