About Look What You Made Me Do

A cover of the August 2017 lead single off of American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift’s sixth studio album, reputation, was released for Killing Eve’s opening title sequence. Shortly after Taylor promoted the song on her social media platforms, fans were quick to point out that the pseudonym ‘Nils Sjöberg’ Taylor used to write the April 2016 hit “This Is What You Came For” alongside ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris has been credited as a producer on the track. An article dating back to February 2020 about how Taylor Swift wanted her brother, Austin Swift, to sing on the soundtrack of Killing Eve also resurfaced — making fans believe that the vocals belonged to Austin. Interestingly, Austin was spotted in the studio with Taylor and producer, singer-songwriter Jack Antonoff back in December 2019. This led to fans theorizing that the cover was recorded back then. The reason why Swift registered the song under a band — Jack Leopards & The Dolphin Club — could be due to her feud with Scooter Braun and her former record label, Big Machine Records. Back in July 2019, Braun’s Ithaca Holdings acquired Big Machine Records for a reported sum of $300 million. This means that the masters of all of Swift’s music were in control by Scooter Braun. Taylor shared on her Tumblr blog: I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. […] This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. By putting out a cover of her song under a cover band and owning the rights to it, Big Machine Records will then not be able to claim any royalties. This was seeming confirmed by Taylor after she liked a Tumblr post about how her fans have “connected the dots.

A cover version of "Look What You Made Me Do" was recorded by band Jack Leopards & the Dolphin Club, and produced by Antonoff and Nils Sjöberg, the latter being a pseudonym that Swift first used as a co-writer for the song "This Is What You Came For" by Calvin Harris featuring Rihanna. The cover was featured in the opening credits of "Beautiful Monster", an episode of the television show Killing Eve that aired on May 24, 2020, and subsequently released on digital music platforms. As there is no documentation of the band's existence before the release of the cover, fans speculated that the singer on the track was Swift's younger brother, Austin Swift, and that the band's name references Antonoff and the Swift siblings. Fans also interpreted the cover to be Swift's way of bypassing potential licensing issues with her former label Big Machine Records and its owner Scooter Braun, with whom Swift is involved in a dispute regarding Braun's acquisition of the label and, subsequently, her back catalogue and master recordings.
