"Rodeo" is a song by American rapper and singer Lil Nas X and American rapper Cardi B from the former's debut EP 7 (2019). It was written by Montero Hill and Belcalis Almánzar, alongside Take a Daytrip's David Biral and Denzel Baptiste, Roy Lenzo and Russ Chell, who produced the song.
According to Take a Daytrip, the guitar lick for "Rodeo" was introduced during Lil Nas X's first studio session ever. The song's chorus was the first part they completed, which was posted to the singer's Instagram before the rest of the song was finished, and drew three million views within two days. A solo version of it was completed a month and a half later in New York City. Cardi B's verse was a late addition to "Rodeo", which Lil Nas X texted to the producers when they "were in the studio working on something else".
Lil Nas X revealed the song's name as part of the tracklist for his debut EP 7 (2019). Cardi B's appearance on it was not announced until the EP's release on June 21, 2019. "Rodeo" samples a guitar riff, described by Uproxx as "a harder rock-oriented loop" similar to Heart's "Barracuda" (1977), "and finds Lil Nas X leaning into his country trap vocal to censure a romantic flame for her dependence on his largesse".
Montero Lamar Hill (born April 9, 1999), better known as Lil Nas X, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia. He is best known for his country rap breakout single "Old Town Road", which achieved viral popularity as part of the "Yeehaw Challenge" on the video sharing app TikTok. "Old Town Road" peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was controversially removed from the Hot Country Songs after debuting at number 19. His debut EP, 7, was released on June 21, 2019.
Montero Lamar Hill was born in Atlanta, Georgia. His parents divorced when he was six, and he settled in the Bankhead Courts housing project with his mother and grandmother. Three years later he moved in with his father north of the city in Austell, a suburb in Cobb County. Although initially reluctant to leave, he later regarded it as an important decision: "There's so much shit going on in Atlanta—if I would have stayed there, I would have fallen in with the wrong crowd," he has said. He began playing trumpet in the fourth grade and was first chair by his junior high years, but quit the instrument out of fear of looking uncool. Hill attended Lithia Springs High School and graduated in 2017. He studied for one year at the University of West Georgia before dropping out. During this time, he stayed with his sister and supported himself with jobs at Zaxby's and Six Flags.
